Question: Is It THAT Easy?

August 24th, 2010

Got an interesting question today from one of my subscribers.--
LOVE, LOVE LOVE your blog and everything you do. Is it really as easy as you make it look?

Am I really THAT transparent?

Just kidding. I know what I do seems fairly simple to those who don't understand the business- and that's why I love questions. So please, send away!

To answer this one-- NO. Nothing is ever easy. And if it is, it's probably too good to be true. Don't throw shit at me yet, I'm getting to the point.

When I first started out in Hollywood, I thought it was going to be a cake walk. I wrote my first screenplay when I was 19 and set off on a selling adventure- only to be told my script was shit. Ok- so plan B. I fixed the script, sent it out to some companies and got told that it was shit. Again.

Back to the drawing board. It took me about six months to catch someone's attention. That person hired me to do a screenplay. I couldn't handle the pressure and boom- found myself kickin' dirt about a week later.

That's right- I got fired.

Didn't see that one coming did you?

Now here's the tricky part- the whole time I struggled with starting ADA Management Group, selling and producing my first screenplay, putting together The SCRIPTOID Writer's Challenge, and finally landing where I am today- I worked my ass off. I held a day job. I struggled to pay my bills. I lost both parents. AND I slept but a few short hours every night.

In all- no, it wasn't easy. But it was worth it.

If you have a dream- stand by it. Work your ass off. Don't be afraid to fail and if someone tells you you're not good enough- fuck them. Your critics will want you to fail, but don't let them bring you down. Life may not be easy, but it's the journey that makes it all worth it.

Peace, Love and Heartbreak ♥
A

thanks for this one. There are times when i dont know how long its going to take and times where i can almost envision myself settling behind the check out counter at jcrew (conforted only by the possibility of an employee discount)-times when i want to give up. But im sure i wont be content unless im writing, so i stick with it. its tough though. but im glad you remain so accessible because reading your blog is comforting. thanks andy!

I've been there. I used to work at Macy's... and there were definitely days I felt like starting a riot in the middle of the women's clothing department. The best thing you can do is keep writing- because the day you give up on it is the day you give up on yourself. :)
