Question: Why Do You Write?

June 27th, 2010

Why does anyone do what they do?
Because I love it.

It's been a long weekend. Unfortunately, that resulted in the neglect of my audience. And, while I was on a mini-hiatus, I received an interesting email question.

andrea-

great blog. love what you do. but why do you write? what was your inspiration? Im in school and id love to hear what makes you you.

I'm truly an individual. You'll discover once you're an avid reader that I'm not your steretypical Hollywood-type. And for that I can thank two people- my parents. They are truly why I write- and why I am who I am today.

After high school, I spent two years working for the University of North Carolina Men's Basketball team as a basketball assistant. Not as glamorous as it sounds- I was a glorified manager. But it was fun- and part of me thought that sports would be the track I'd stay on. But then I quit school, moved home, and boom- I was right back where I started. Just another college dropout living in a small town with mommy and daddy.

I was always a writer. During high school, I was a staff member on the school newspaper. I always passed English with flying colors. And I absolutely loved creative writing. As a kid, I spent hours sitting at my grandmother's typewriter making up amazing stories about far off places. I even remember my mother telling me I was a writer. And that, someday, despite my dreams of being the first woman coach in men's basketball, I would come back to my roots.

She was right. I moved to Florida less than a year after quitting college, wrote my first screenplay, and the rest is history.

In 2008, I lost my mother to cancer. And, only four short months later, in January of 2009, my father died of a heart attack.

They were my support system. They were there when I moved away for college. They were there when I came home. And, before my mother passed, she was able to read my first screenplay. And she told me to go for it. Those words have stuck with me since.

So that, my fans, is why I write. I write for my love of the craft. And I write for them.

Peace, Love and Heartbreak ♥
A
